Crystal Clinic Surgeon Develops New Technique To Treat Lateral Hip Pain
5/2/2018
Crystal Clinic Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Jovan Laskovski, has developed a new surgical technique to repair tears to the abductor tendons that commonly cause lateral hip pain. His technique was published in February 2018’s The Arthroscopy Techniques Journal.
According to Laskovski, these problems tend to be frustrating for both orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians because MRIs will often miss a diagnosis of a tear or partial thickness tear of the gluteus medius and minimus. He realized this issue early in his practice and began treating patients both surgically and nonsurgically.
“This was an extremely vexing problem for both patients and physicians, and the technique shows much promise in being able to treat an extremely common, but unfortunately poorly unrecognized problem,” he explained. “It also addresses the unfortunate high re-tear rate with simply repairing the tendon, allowing for better overall outcomes with an extremely low revision rate.”
Historically, surgery for repairing these tendons has a relatively high failure rate of 35 percent. Dr. Laskovski’s new technique repairs the tendon and also adds allograft cadaver tissue to reinforce the repair, leading to a 95 percent success rate in his patients this past year. His approach also aids improved healing of and feeling in the hips.
Dr. Laskovski presented these outcomes at the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) meeting in Santiago, Chile and will present the updated outcomes this fall at the ISHA meeting in Melbourne, Australia. There was great interest in his approach since the success rate is significantly improved using his new technique, which Dr. Laskovski has since begun teaching to surgeons in America and around the world.
