FAIRLAWN, OHIO, Aug. 15, 2024 – Raymond Acus, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon at Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, is a 2024 inductee of Akron Athletics and the Varsity “A” Association Hall of Fame at The University of Akron (UA). Dr. Acus, a fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, total joint replacement and care of the hip, knee, shoulder and elbow, served more than 20 years as team physician at UA. Dr. Acus is being honored with the Hall of Fame’s Kenneth “Red” Cochrane Meritorious Service Award.

During his time as team physician at UA, Dr. Acus treated thousands of student-athletes, many by providing career-saving surgeries. The university credits him for his “superhero-like efforts” to keep key players on the field during the second half of the 2005 MAC football championship. This led to UA’s first and only MAC football championship. He was also the team physician for the men’s soccer 2010 NCAA National Championship team, as well as over 75 other MAC championship teams. For 20 years, Dr. Acus covered every home and away game during the football season and every home men’s basketball game.

“Crystal Clinic has a long history of taking care of high school and college athletes throughout northeast Ohio. I have many fond memories of the 20-plus years I was team physician at The University of Akron. To be recognized by being inducted into the Varsity “A” Hall of Fame is truly an honor,” he said.

Dr. Acus is most proud of the role he played in elevating the quality of medical care for student-athletes at UA. He and retired Crystal Clinic orthopaedic surgeon, Timothy Myer, M.D., who also served as UA’s team physician, provided the funds to purchase portable X-ray equipment for on-field imaging, as well as hot and cold tubs for the athletes.

“I really enjoyed all the people I met during my time at UA – from the athletes and coaches to the athletic trainers and donors. It’s a great feeling to watch an athlete score a game-winning basket or touchdown, knowing that you helped them return to the game and excel,” he said.

Dr. Acus treats patients of all ages at Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center’s Cuyahoga Falls clinic. For more information about Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Acus, visit CrystalClinic.com or call 888-556-7575.
